One thing I wish I had known when I began my career is how difficult it can be to be a truly excellent manager.
In my business I empower women by always making sure they have a chance to be heard in meetings.
My management style is decisive, supportive, and responsive.
A major challenge I’ve faced was trying to decide if I wanted to try a new job as chief marketing officer after 20 years of doing purely corporate communications. I was stuck in making my decision because I wasn’t sure I’d succeed. I was fortunate enough to have fantastic support from internal stakeholders who wanted me to take on the role and outside friends and advisors who helped me think through the upside rather than just the downside.
The things that keeps me up at night is moving too slowly on diversity and not having enough people of color represented on my team at senior levels.
LinkedIn has changed how people think about their jobs because we have helped people realize that careers don’t necessarily have to be linear, but can be filled with twists and turns, and there is always a network of people there to help you navigate that.
The most important thing to remember about your LinkedIn profile is you should keep it updated even when you’re not actively looking for a job.
I tap into creativity and inspiration by listening to unique podcasts that expand my narrow view of the world and walking the streets of international cities when I’m travelling for work.
The thing I’ve achieved that I am most proud of is proving to my kids that women are inherently capable of being great executives and great mothers. You don’t have to choose to be good at only one of them.
The one thing I would like to say to every woman in the world is don’t put yourself in your own way. Be your own advocate and use your voice.
